Goth Cowboy is the solo indie project of Minneapolis musician Maya Subramanian. Goth Cowboy is an ode to the Wild West-ideals of freedom, but in this case, freedom of self-expression and thought. The “Goth” refers to the whimsigoth aesthetic of 90’s female-led indie bands such as Mazzy Star and The Cranberries, whose music and style inspire Maya. Goth Cowboy often plays with themes of nostalgia, yearning, and fate vs. free will, and Maya blends her classically-trained pianist ear with her love for indie rock, shoegaze, folk, and electronic music to create the sound that is Goth Cowboy.
